2018 3D Map Key & Description Camp Dogwood – with sidewalks
This document should be available for campers and staff at Camp Dogwood in at least three formats: regular print, large font print and braille. There will also be an online text and mp3 audio version. These maps are designed specifically to help the Significantly Blind but will be useful to people with limited sight also.
This document will provide a description of the features of the 3D Printer maps of Camp Dogwood which were graciously provided by Duke University.
There will be one page that describes the features of each map. This description will include a key of the raised letters that describe buildings or rooms.
There are a total of four 3D Printer maps of the Camp Dogwood complex. The four maps are listed below.
The map of the main Camp Dogwood Campus includes the lower buildings but does not include the upper buildings such as the Putt-Putt Barn. It also shows the road, parking area and sidewalks.
The map of the dock area shows the dock and the swimming area. This map also shows the sidewalks and the shoreline.
The indoor map of the Joyce Lodge shows all of the rooms and entrance ways that campers can use.
The indoor map of the Joyce Lodge Lobby area gives more details on the use of the rooms.
The maps are provided in two formats. A framed version of all four maps will be available mounted for ease of feel. There will also be individual maps a camper can hold to orient themselves. These are two sided maps. One map will have the Camp Dogwood Campus in raised relief on one side and the Dock area on the other side in lower relief. The other hand held map will be an indoor raised relieve of the Joyce Lodge. On the other side will be a raised relief of the Joyce Lodge Lobby area.
Map Orientation: All of the maps have orientation marks in the upper left hand corner . The four framed 3D maps are mounted with the Camp Dogwood Campus area and the Dock area map on the left. The Indoor Map of the Joyce Lodge will be in the lower right with the Indoor Map of the Joyce Lodge Lobby area above it.
Map of Main Camp Dogwood Campus
The map is not intended to be exactly to scale, rather is is intended to be used for orientation. This map can be readily identified by the raised building structures on the 3D map.
The orientation mark on the map is in the upper left hand corner. If you run your finger on the top edge from left to right, you will feel an indentation in the middle of the top edge. Directly below this indentation is the Joyce Lodge. There are raised letters J L to identify this as the Joyce Lodge. If you feel this object, you can get a general idea of the shape of the building with its two wings and center connecting room. The left wing contains the Conference Room and the right wing contains the Dining rooms and the Kitchen. The center connecting rooms contain the Lobby, the store, the restrooms, the Library and the office area.
Assuming the 3D map is a clock face, and the Joyce Lodge is at 12 O’Clock, move your fingers to the right to 2 O’Clock and you will feel a raised line outline with a D in the middle. This represents the Dog Run behind the Lineberger Dormitory. Moving your fingers down to around 3 O’clock, you will feel a raised structure with a raised letter L to the right. This represents the Lineburger Dormitory. Continue moving your fingers down to around 4 O’Clock and you will feel another raised structure with a U to the right. This represents the Udovich Dormitory. Move your fingers to 6 O’Clock at the bottom and you will feel a raised structure with a S on it. This is the Stickley Building. Move your fingers to the left on the bottom at around 7 O’Clock and you will feel a raised structure with a W to the left. This is the White Dormitory. Move your fingers up to around 8 O’Clock and you will feel a raised structure with a C to the left. This is Cottage Duplex 3 & 4. You will notice two raised lines running from the right of the structure. This represents the sidewalks leading from the Duplex to Camp Dogwood Drive. There are short raised lines running from Lineberger & Udovich also. Move your fingers up to around 9 O’Clock and you will feel another raised structure with a C to the left. This is Cottage Duplex 1 & 2. There are two raised lines on the right indicating sidewalks. Move your fingers up to around 10 O’Clock and you will feel a raised structure with a P to the left. This is the picnic shelter. There is a raised line to indicate a ramp and sidewalk that leads to Camp Dogwood Drive. While not indicated on the 3D map, there is also a ramp on the upper side of the Picnic Shelter. Another recent addition to Camp Dogwood not shown on the map is sidewalks in front of all of the dormitories that lead to the Joyce Lodge.
If you put your fingers in the center of the 3D map, you will feel a raised long loop line. This is the sidewalk loop leading from the Stickley Building to the Joyce Lodge. The Dormitories can also be accessed from this sidewalk. If you feel to the left or right outside of the raised sidewalk line, you will feel a surface and then an indented area. If you explore this indented area you will feel a loop which represents Camp Dogwood Drive. There are wider indented areas in front of the Dormitories to indicate parking areas.
Map of Dock & Swim Area
From the Camp Dogwood Main Campus Map, you will notice an indent at the bottom center just below the Joyce Lodge. This represents the sidewalk leading to the Dock area from the back of the Joyce Lodge. Turn the map over top to bottom and you will have the Dock/Swim Area Map properly oriented. The center indented mark should now be on the bottom center edge.
If you explore this 3D Map you will notice that all of the features are indented. There is a rough semi-circle which represents the water line. The wide indented line represents a sidewalk. The sidewalk splits, with the right path leading to the Swim Area. The swim area is indicated with a rough sub-surface and some dots. You will notice that there is a connecting sidewalk near the water line that connects the Swim Area sidewalk with the Dock sidewalk.
The Dock sidewalk goes straight and leads to the Dock Ramp. If the Dock or Swim Area are closed, there will be a rope blocking the walkway.
There is a long ramp leading to the dock. There is a W to indicate water.
Indoor 3D Map of Joyce Lodge
There is an orientation mark of four raised dashes in the top left corner on this map. This indoor map is not to scale and is intended for orientation only. This map can be readily identified by the flat area on the top left for the visual key.
This is an indoor map of the entire Joyce Lodge. A more detailed map of the Lobby area is on the back of this map.
The outer walls of the Joyce Lodge are indicated by a wide indented line. If you run your finger around the wide indented line you will get a rough idea of the shape of the building. Return your fingers to the bottom center surface of the map. Feel the wide indented line and you will notice it is wider than the rest of the indented line. This represents the front door of the Joyce Lodge. If you move your fingers towards the top of the map, past the raised L in the center of the map, you will find raised letters RC. Just above this you will notice another indented area which indicates the back door to the Joyce Lodge.
Returning to the bottom center of the map where the indented line is wider to indicate the front door, you will feel two vertical lines, one on each side. This is the hallway as you enter the lodge. As you explore the 3D map, you will notice other raised lines. These lines indicate walls that divide the lodge into rooms. Breaks in the raised lines indicate doors or open areas in the wall. There are two exceptions. On the lower left and lower right, there are two raised lines broken at regular intervals. These broken lines indicate areas that campers do not have access to.
The surface outside the wide indented lines of the exterior walls is slightly higher than the rest of the map, but this does not indicate walls or anything else.
Some of the rooms have raised letters to identify the use of the room. The letters are: L for Lobby, C for Conference Room, RC for Rocking Chair Porch, DR for upper Dining Room and D for Dining Room.
If you explorer the bottom half of the 3D map, you will notice three raised stars. Feeling from left to right you will find one star in the lower right corner of the room with a C. This marks the entrance to the conference room. Feeling to the right, you will find a star in the lower right corner of an unmarked room. This star denotes the Front Desk. Moving further to the right, you will find a star at the bottom right of the room with an L. This marks the entrance to the dining room.
Indoor Map of Lobby Area – Flip map left to right to get proper orientation
This map is not to scale and is intended for orientation purposes only. Also not every feature is identified.
Orientation marks are in the top left surface of the map.
Begin by exploring the indented line around the map. This line is just on the inside of the raised area on the edges. Exploring the interior raised lines you will notice wide areas in the indented line at the bottom, on the left side, at the top and two on the right side. These wider areas indicate doors or passage ways. The wider area at the bottom center is the front door of the lodge. The wider area on the left is the double doors leading to the Conference Room and the Nurse Area. The wider indented line at the top is the door from the Lobby to the screened in Rocking Chair Porch. The two wider indented areas on the right are the two entrance ways to the Dining Room. Typically, campers line up for meals at the lower entrance way along the wall.
If you explore the rooms along the bottom of the map you will notice that three of the rooms are labeled. To the right of the entrance hall, there is a room labeled S which is the Camp Dogwood Store. The entrance to the store is on the right wall of the entrance hall near the corner. On the left are two rooms. These rooms are off a hall which goes left at the end of the entrance hall. The first room is labeled W which stands for Women Restroom. The door is almost a foot or so down the hall to the left. The second room is labeled M which stands for Men Restroom. The entrance is approximately 20 feet down the left hall. It is the third door you will encounter on the left wall. You will notice a raised start just above and to the left of this door. This represents the entry to the conference room.
Exploring the middle of the map, you will encounter a raised area with a raised D on it. The D stands for the Front Desk. This is where you can get information, etc. There is a raised star on the front desk. To the left of the desk is a raised line which indicates the camp office area. Typically this is not an area campers go. To the left of this area is a room labeled Lib for Library. This area has computers, CCTV devices, etc as well as books and movies.
To the right of the front desk is a series of u’s, normal & upside down, which indicate chairs facing each other. There is other furniture in the Lobby that is not represented. To the right and below these u’s is a start next to the line representing the lobby wall. This star denotes the entrance to the dining room.
At the top right of the map is a room labeled GR for Game Room. There is furniture and vending machines in this area which are not represented on the map. The gaps in the game room wall represent walk ways to the lobby.
